Summer: The Opportunity

Yes, the snow is all gone, and finally the grass is a bit greener, the skies a bit clearer, and the days a bit brighter. It can be no other than that familiar time: summer. Out go the days of restless studying, the endless essays and tests. But it's not all fun under the Sun ‒ Summer is a prime opportunity to gain some new skills and acquire some new knowledge.

 

Sounds boring? Well, think again! Whether you're applying for a job or college/university, give yourself an advantage with a bit of work during the summer. Here are some things to consider:

 

Volunteer

No time to earn those 40 volunteers hours during the school year? No sweat, the summer is just the perfect time to get them done. Involve yourself in tasks like volunteering at the library or a camp. Join organizations like Brampton Multicultural Youth  Council or the YMCA, among many others. Learn new skills, and meet great people.

 

Get Outside

Don't be a couch potato ‒ go outside and enjoy the fresh air! There are plenty of fun activities and sports available at your local community centre and neighbourhood.

 

Read

Read. Improve your understanding and vocabulary of any languages you desire, and explore the vast amount of written works out there. You won't get through them all ‒ but the ones you do get through will be very beneficial. Be it literature like 1984 or Shakespeare, the latest dystopian and hit, a scientific adventure, works of history like Winston Churchill's Diary, or even manga, all is of use. Pick up a book and get reading!

 

Enjoy Yourself

Relax! It's the Summer ‒ a BREAK from school! Catch up on sleep, learn that dance move or song, read that book, play that video game, chill with friends, work out ‒ the possibilities are limitless.

Get a Summer Job

Apply, apply, apply! Start accumulating work experience in order to build your resume and advance to greater careers and beyond. Gain essential skills, like learning to work with others, and experience the world around you. Earn some cash while you're at it, to pay off any tuitions in the future, buy that [Insert Item] you always wanted, and become self-sufficient.
