Black History Month

by: Lolade S.

Black History Month is a period where everyone, regardless of race, gender, religion or status, should take the time to learn and appreciate the continuous making of Black History. Behold Turner Fenton’s Black History Month Committee: Heads of the committee: Kiki. B and Toyibat. O Head of promotions: Lolade. S Heads of art: Aysha. M and Atina. B This year, Turner Fenton’s Black History Month Committee did a splendid job! From planning movie days to planning an in-school assembly, we worked tirelessly to promote school spirit. On the 1st week of February, we screened The Princess and The Frog in the north theatre. On the 2nd week, we began hosting the “Share your thoughts...” initiative. This year, the black icon chosen was: Nelson Mandela.

On the 3rd week, we screened Fruitvale Station and The Great Debaters in the north theatre. On the 4th week of February, we showcased our assembly at the north theatre. Congratulations to Lilian. O for winning the Tim Horton’s gift card for sharing her thoughts on Nelson Mandela: “’Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."Education isn't often spoken about in relation to Nelson Mandela, but this is quote which I believe is important, and has relevance to my life. Normally when a person hears the word "education", the dreary picture of school and arbitrary (and quite frankly, useless concepts is thought up. But that is not all that education is, especially given this month in the year. Of course do your homework, and get good grades, but don't forget to take a look at the history of humanity, and how far we've come.

From the Atlantic Slave Trade to liberation and freedom from oppression in South Africa, to a black man being the "leader of the free world." The example is of black people, but the same can be seen in all races. All this and there is still so much more to do. We must be educated on all the atrocities of the past before we can work for a better and brighter future with the goal of equality in mind. Nelson Mandela serves as an example to everyone who wishes to see a better future in their lifetime” Lillian. O. The Black History Month assembly was an absolute success! Certainly, we want Black History Month to be a well respected and memorable period for all Turner Fenton students for many more years to come. Indeed, we will certainly be releasing 2014-15 executive applications soon; hence, for all of you, who enjoy leadership roles, make sure to apply! Once again, a HUGE thank-you to everyone who contributed to Black History Month’s success this year!
