Every student at Turner Fenton Secondary School anxiously waited for undoubtedly the biggest event in Turner Fenton, the annual CultureFest! On April 9th2014 as students poured into the North and South wings, they flocked to their classes to arrive before the 8:15 A.M. bell rang, marking yet another late on your attendance (something I personally struggle with on a daily basis). However, on April 9tharrived early to class only to observe a sense of elation exuberating from the smiles of my fellow peers. By the time we reached the North Gymnasium, the feeling of anticipation escalated from the unknown faces of the other students as well and the excitement in the air was nothing less than contagious.

As students were rushing in to fill the seats and rows, the lights dimmed to adistinct neon red, and the blood in my veins rushed rampantly through my body. With a Disney-esque logo fading onto the screen, C-FEST 2014 had officially commenced, “Let the festival of Cultures begin,”(appropriately read out aloud in the Bane voice)!

Though some students did mention that the technical difficulties did bog down the event’s excitement during period 1. Jeremy Dalton Hardman III, another grade 11 student exclaimed, “I was so darn excited for some of the dances, however the music not playing properly killed it for me man”. However, apart from that letdown (which we hope doesn’t occur next year) C-FEST 2014 Day 1 was splendid!

The dances burst onto the scene with great energy radiating across thegymnasium. The music reverberated through the numerous individuals and with asight of beautiful dresses, colours and stellar choreography, one can truly say that it was a celebration of cultures. In addition, the various dances were expertly weaved in a medieval fairy-tale story of a Princess learning about how her parents, the King and Queen, got married.

As the various dances progressed from Ballet to Bollywood, one could seethe spectacular result of the 7 months of handwork poured into this event by the coordinators (Mr. T/Saud), execs and the talented choreographers.

There was a general consensus between students after they walked out ofthe gymnasium, “It was awesome, totally blew my mind apart,” proclaimed Bodee Quansah, a grade 11 student, pointing out that, “the idea of remixing cultures reflects the Canadian identity.”
