February Trojans Sports Update

by: Manan Ahuja

I know it’s been a while, and I know you guys missed the monthly sports news, but your leading Sports Writer is back! While Canada is destroying USA in Hockey up over at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Turner Fenton is also quietly making us proud and thus, they deserved to be recognized.

First up, let’s start off with our Senior Girls Volleyball Team. The Senior Girls recently went to a Volleyball Tournament at Central Peel and did not disappoint. They were able to defeat David Suzuki Secondary School in the finals, winning in a hard-fought battle which took 3 sets. But our girls showed their resilience and came out on up. Congratulations to them on a great win! Moving forward, we’ll talk about their regular season success over the past two months. During these two months, the Senior Girls Volleyball were busy playing a handful of games against various schools such as Bramalea, Brampton Centennial, Central Peel, Lincoln Alexander, North Park and Notre Dame Secondary School. The girls had a great amount of success against Bramalea, Central Peel and Lincoln Alexander, taking both sets in their only meeting, and winning against Brampton Centennial 2-1. Unfortunately, they did not have the same success against North Park and Notre Dame, losing to both schools with a heart breaking final score of 1-2. This puts Turner Fenton at 4 wins and 3 losses in the North Central Division, only trailing North Park and Cardinal Leger, but they are outside of the playoff bubble, looking in.

Moving on from Senior Girls Volleyball to Junior Girls Volleyball. The Junior Girls Volleyball team did not have the same success as the

with St. Augustine twice. They were able to crush Brampton Centennial twice and Ascension once with a score of 48-17, 43-24 and 40-25 respectively. It brings me great grief to say that they did not have the same success against St. Augustine, losing both times by a large margin and losing to Ste. Famille once, in a close game with a score of 42-49. Still, a great effort was shown by our Junior Boys, who should keep their heads up high after a successful season by finishing 3rd in the North Central Division. They ended the season with a record of 4-4 while allowing 317 points, and scoring 297 over the course of the 8 games.

To end on a positive note, let’s discuss the success of Turner Fenton’s Wrestling Team. The annual ROPPSAA Wrestling Tournament was held on Thursday, February 20th and our wrestlers did not fail to make Turner Fenton Proud. The Turner Fenton Boys and Girls were able to receive the Overall School Titles at this tournament. Furthermore, Jake Tyler Sullivan, Ryan Lanktree and William Young all received silver medals for their amazing performance along with qualification to the OFSAA. Also, Jacob Alexander, Jacob Policarpio, Raquel Reid, Shaundell Simmons, Carmella Fluerant, and Janet Tang all won gold for their hard work and also qualified for the OFSAA Tournament. Great effort by our wrestling team and good luck for the upcoming OFSAA tournament!

Senior Girls Volleyball as they have not won a game to date, having lost both sets to all of the schools in their division, putting them last in the North Central Division, with a record of 0-6. They have lost 12 sets over the course of this season, to Bramalea, Brampton Centennial, Cardinal Leger, Central Peel, North Park and Notre Dame Secondary School. Regardless, they were able to win one set while facing a tough Central Peel team, but sadly, it was not enough to capture the victory. Keep your heads up high Junior Girls! You still made Turner proud from the competitive spirit you guys brought forth at every game!

Next, let’s analyse the success of the Senior Boys Basketball Team over the course of these two months. During this time, the Senior Boys played Brampton Centennial and St. Augustine twice, and also played once against both Ascension and Ste. Famille. It breaks my heart to say that the Senior Boys were not able to win any game, causing their overall record to be 0-8 in the North Central Division, allowing 463 points over the course of 8 games while only scoring 360. Turner also had many heartbreakingly close loses during this span, by losing to Ste. Famille by 6 points, with a score of 46-52, losing to St. Augustine by only 2 points with a score of 59-61 and losing to the Division Leaders,  Brampton Centennial, by only 3 points with a score of 51-54. Nonetheless, our Senior Boys made us very proud, and put on a show for us Trojans every time they played at TFSS.

Now it’s time for the Junior Boys Basketball Team. Our Junior Boys played both Ste. Famille and Ascension once over the course of these two months and played both Brampton Centennial along
